The SamandRuby Charity has been created as a lasting tribute to Samantha and RubyRose Archer Fayet who were lost in the 2004 Tsunami.
The aim of the charity is to help disadvantaged children in Thailand, especially in Phang Nga Province. This is the region most damaged by the Tsunami and it's where Sam and Ruby were lost.
The kindness of the local people, who themselves had lost so much, to surviving foreign visitors and their families was astounding. In the time when they themselves were in the deepest need, they still gave help and succor and reached out to the survivors.
The SamandRuby Charity has been working in Phang Nga Province
since 2006. Its aim is to
give the children of this area a chance at the type of education
that will help them create a better
life for themselves.
In the aftermath of the Tsunami many children who had become homeless orphans went to stay at their schools. Needless to say these were hardly equipped to shelter, feed and educate the many children who had nowhere else to go.
In Thailand education is free until the age of 13, but for many people it's too expensive to buy basic necessities such as shoes, school uniforms, books and even school meals. Very often children are needed to work in order to supplement the family income. The lack of education makes the children, especially girls, very vulnerable and easy to exploit.
Thanks to the donations made so far, a lot has been achieved already, though we still want to do much, much more.
The photo gallery shows some of the work done in 2006 and of the ongoing work in 2007.
-In Ban Yan Yao, Taquapa, where 1.400 children go, 2 new class rooms were built for English lessons, new toilets were built and renovations done on the cafeteria. As this was a huge project help was given by The Amanpuri Hotel in Phuket;
-In Ban Kli, a school for 205 children, a new cafeteria was built and equipped with tables and benches and a washing up area and the lavatories were built;
-In Karaburi the school was equipped with new lavatories;
-In Taquapa the Sananukul School received a new computer;
-In Ban Ta Tin Daeng the school received sponsoring for one year and now there is a music teacher;
-In Yaowawit Kampong the nursery school for orphans received a donation;
- In Taquapa a gift of 50.000 Baht worth of building materials was given to a family of Tsunami survivors who helped Patrice and other survivors. The family had lost many of its members and their house. Their 2 children are receiving sponsorships enabling them to go to school for 2 years.
-The Bang Bang Tong school boundary was repainted and the 64 children were supplied with shoes and socks. This year a new cafeteria is being built and a kitchen and 5 tables and benches installed. A disused building will be rebuilt to create 3 class rooms, one of which will be the computer room, another a library. The work has started.
-The Wat Patikaram school's cafeteria is in the process of being renovated and 10 tables and benches will be supplied;
-Computer class rooms are being created in Baan Don School, Kao Pilai School, Baan Lampi School and Po Daeng school. The computer project is done with help from 4Kali Org, who have been given refurbished computers and asked our help by supplying computer tables and chairs and to create the set-up to start the network, i.e. organising the electricity, computer programming, painting and repairing the class rooms, making partitions in the rooms, etc. Every school has different needs. Two of the schools are now set and running and the others will be ready soon;
-2 new computers have been bought for the English class rooms of the Ban Yan Yao School in Takua Pa, as they are fortunate and have an English teacher, by the name of Penny, sponsored by the Wangenheim family, themselves survivors of the Tsunami;
-A walkway between the kindergarten/cafeteria and the main building is underway in the Baan Don school. We have also given toys to the small Burmese school in Khao Lak.
-special thanks for all their help goes to 4Kali Org and their general manager David van der Laan, the English Head teacher at Baan Yan Yao School Mrs. Suda Thangvigit Fred Vernier, the general manager of the Amanpuri Hotel in Phuket and to Palita Kongthungmon from the Cradle organisation, whose help was invaluable all these made the work of the SamandRubyRose Charity possible.
